Energy Consumption and Global Warming

Many liberals treat global warming as the existential issue of the century, one that supersedes all other considerations. They believe only radical solutions can save the world, and they point to the catastrophic consequences of continued fossil fuel use. The truth is that simplistic answers are no solution to the most complex problem of our time. The real-world implications of sweeping energy bans fall hardest on the poorest people on earth. Stunts like defacing works of art or blocking working-class commuters from getting to their jobs are not bold statements — they are performative acts of self-aggrandizement that accomplish nothing, alienate potential allies, and actively damage the very cause they claim to advance.

Conservatives, for their part, largely dismiss any serious concern about the dangers of global warming. This dismissal is partly a reaction to the overreach of simplistic liberal protest movements that ignore the full consequences of the energy restrictions they demand. Ridiculous opposition stunts and expensive, draconian policy proposals do not persuade — they harden resistance. They drive support toward conservative voices who reject even the moderate, carefully considered solutions that honestly account for what energy bans and limitations actually cost.

Centrists recognize that this challenge is both staggeringly complex and massive in scope. Eight billion people — the majority of them in the developing world, below the poverty line, and in daily danger of hunger — depend on affordable energy to survive. Theatrical gestures like destroying artwork or snarling traffic accomplish about as much as filling the ocean with an eyedropper, while simultaneously handing conservatives their most effective recruiting arguments. Ego-stroking activism helps no one except the activists themselves, feeding a sense of moral superiority while undermining the cause they claim to believe in.

Liberal advocates consistently ignore what their radical proposals would actually do to the billions of poor people living across the developing, emerging, and developed world alike. The wealthy people they profess to oppose will absorb higher energy prices without blinking. It is the world's poor who will bear the full weight of shortsighted energy policy. The recent global energy crisis has already demonstrated this — causing widespread economic chaos and social unrest driven by the very real fear that families will go unfed. Starvation is not a hypothetical for billions of people, and energy policies that drive prices higher do not raise awareness. They produce famine and death.

Centrists believe those billions of people deserve genuine respect — and genuine solutions. They deserve affordable, reliable energy while the world builds its way toward better alternatives. Centrists support maintaining lower prices and stable supply of conventional energy in parallel with aggressively developing clean alternatives. These goals are not mutually exclusive. We can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Centrists believe that advancing alternative energy solutions is the real path forward on fossil fuel pollution and global warming. And the progress is real — every single day, new alternative energy solutions come online. Centrists would challenge radical activists to redirect their energy: stop leading with negativity and start celebrating the solutions already taking shape around you. Show up at the opening of a wind farm. Visit a new solar installation and offer genuine encouragement. Point your followers toward the extraordinary innovation being published every day. If awareness is truly your goal, publicize the positive breakthroughs happening right now. Better yet, become an engineer and contribute a solution yourself. Simplistic, negative stunts and self-righteous scolding may feel satisfying, but they cause measurable damage to the cause every day they continue.

As Oscar Wilde observed, "Morality is simply the attitude we adopt towards people we personally dislike." Demanding crude solutions that harm billions of people does not put you on the moral high ground — it just makes it harder for the rest of us to get there.
