Centrists recognize that the current drug and alcohol treatment industry is far too expensive and riddled with fraud and waste. Too many addicted people are overcharged, undertreated, drained of their resources, and then abandoned — long before most have any real chance to improve. This is no longer acceptable. Fraud and waste must be aggressively rooted out so that people struggling with addiction actually have a fighting chance at recovery.

A Better Treatment Model

Centrists believe in rebuilding the system around longer treatment terms at dramatically lower costs. Current cure rates of less than 10% are unacceptable — especially given what patients and insurers are paying. Alongside traditional approaches, we support the widespread adoption of newer treatments that may not achieve complete abstinence but can set patients up for vastly improved lives with dramatically reduced use. Progress is not failure. A life stabilized is a life worth saving.

Centrists also support limiting the liability of drug and alcohol treatment centers — except in cases of deliberate or reckless mistreatment. A significant portion of current treatment costs exists simply to cover legal exposure.

Reasonable liability reform, tied directly to lower costs and longer treatment access, is a net benefit for addicted people and their families. We are for whatever actually helps them.

Where the Other Side Gets It Wrong

Conservatives have long defaulted to incarceration as their answer to drug addiction. The record is clear: it doesn't work, and it costs a fortune. Prison is not a treatment center, and pretending otherwise has destroyed millions of lives and wasted billions of dollars.

Liberals, meanwhile, have tended toward permissive treatment frameworks that underestimate the powerful grip addiction has on the human brain. Voluntary treatment programs consistently fall far short of their goals —not because addicts lack willpower, but because addiction is a medical condition that often requires structured, sustained intervention to overcome.

The centrist answer is mandated treatment — at the lowest possible cost, for longer periods of time — as the real path to meaningful, productive lives for people with serious addictions. For individuals who have committed significant legal violations driven by addiction, court-mandated treatment should be the default, not incarceration. Millions of people fall into this category, and the state-supported treatment model is superior in every measurable way to using jails and prisons as a failed substitute.

Encouraging the Shift Already Underway

There is genuine good news: young people are turning away from drugs and alcohol in record numbers. This trend must be encouraged and protected. The casual, wink-and-nod attitude many older Americans have toward overconsumption needs to be replaced with honest, direct messaging — overconsumption is a scourge, and treating it as a rite of passage does real damage to the next generation.

Centrists support a complete ban on alcohol advertising as a critical first step. Alcohol ads universally portray drinking as exciting, glamorous, and consequence-free — and young people are especially susceptible to that message. We banned cigarette advertising for exactly this reason, and it worked. The relaxation of alcohol advertising bans was a mistake. It is time to restore those restrictions. Millions of young lives depend on us acting boldly.
